For example freons have a very bad influence on the ozon layer and the greenhouse effect. Directly through leakage or indirectly through energy consumption necessary for its production and utilization. However installations based on ammonia could be dangerous for people, specially in the case where the pipelines with ammonia are placed inside the rooms where people work. Whats more, in case of any kind of breakdown and ammonia leakage inside the production hall or warehouse, a chemical decon must be done first and later a normal decontamination from the strong and specific smell of ammonia, which is a very costfull and time-consuming activity. The necesity of building a central cooling installation for Intereuropol was the best opportunity to use innovative and modern technologies to minimalize the risk, environmental pollution and danger for people. Therefore we put great pressure on two main factors selecting a new cooling installation for our company: human security and environment safety. In the time of tightened ecological norms, the applied cooling solutions should be effective as well as environmental friendly. Because of the fact that our factory is placed near a inhabited area, the chosen cooling system had to be uncompromising and best in security matters.The best solution to fullfil both criterias was offered by the GEA Grasso limited corporation. We installed an innovative cooling system based on a hybrid NH3/CO2 technology, that means ammonia corbon dioxide cooling installation, where CO2 is an indirect cooling factor. Our factory is the first place in Poland where such a system was installed. Both ammonia and carbodioxide are commonly existing in nature and totally harmless for the environment. Also high productivity of the system reduces energy cunsumption. The applied solution is a hybrid installation based on high energy efficiency of ammonia but reduces its amount and presence only to the generator room (which could be easily specially secured). The only fluid left in production rooms and warehouses is the CO2, which is completely neutral to the environment. In such big spaces as we have in our factory even a breakdown and a leakage of CO2 would not be harmfull in any way to the environment nor dangerous to the people. The cooling of carbon dioxide is obtained in the heat exchanger from cooled ammonia. Resulted heat waste from this process can be regained, because the CO2 in the pipelines is transported to the evaporators without oil film (as it normally takes place with freon and ammonia) but in a clear condition, and because of that its much more efficient in the evaporator as the heat exchanger.
